Greece's first WTA Tour event in 35 years, returning to the city where the women's tour was last played in 1990.
A 36-year return — and a family relay
The Athens Open is the first WTA Tour event held in the Greek capital since the 1990 Athens Trophy. The new edition is led by Maria Sakkari (career-high WTA No. 3), whose mother Angeliki Kanellopoulou contested the final of the inaugural Athens Trophy in 1986. Mother to daughter, court to court — 36 years apart.
Athens is where I first picked up a tennis racket and dreamed of becoming a tennis player. It's truly special the WTA are now staging a tournament here.
